THE ALEPPO TEMPLE (AAONMS)
SHRINE ORIENTAL BAND NEWS FOR THE YEAR 2011

CELEBATING OUR 60TH YEAR

The above is the official logo of the Aleppo Temple (AAONMS) Oriental Band.

Following our Winter/Holiday recess, we resumed our rehearsals on January 6, 2011 as we began our SIXTIETH YEAR as a Unit.

ALEPPO 2011 POTENTATE - JOHN E. GRANT, JR.

ROBERT (BOB) BROWNE aka "BROWNIE"
On January 3, 2011, the BAND was informed that the BLACK CAMEL visited ROBERT (BOB) BROWNE aka "BROWNIE" on DECEMBER 30, 2010 and took him to the ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND. BOB was a well liked individual in our BAND and an extremely talented drummer. Both his spirit and his talent will be missed by us. We thank the BROWNE FAMILY for sharing ELEANOR (ELLIE, BOB'S WIFE, who passed away on March 16, 2010) and BOB with us - they were both a joy to be with and they will be missed by those who knew them.

ELEANOR (ELLIE) AND ROBERT (BOB) BROWNE
On January 15, 2011, a good number of BAND MEMBERS attended a Memorial Service for our fellow BAND MEMBER, ROBERT (BOB) BROWNE aka "BROWNIE". A large turnout of people at the event gave testimony to the following memorial:

MEMORIAL TO ROBERT (BOB) BROWNE aka "BROWNIE"
On JANUARY 29, 2011, we participated at the ANNUAL ALEPPO INSTALLATION CEREMONIAL which was held in Wilmington, Massachusetts. A good turnout at the event contributed to our putting on an exemplary and satisfying performance for all in attendance. We congratulate the new officers of ALEPPO and we are looking forward to working with them.

LESTER OSHRY
On March 21, 2011, the BAND received notice that, on March 18, 2011, the BLACK CAMEL had visited the OSHRY residence and taken our fellow BANDSMAN and ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, LESTER OSHRY, to the ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND. LESTER and his wife, BELLA (who predeceased him), will always be remembered as amongst the most affable, friendly, and thoughtful members that we have had. They both had a positive spirit and attitude about them that would not yield to the many challenges each faced in the last years of their being. LESTER cared for BELLA when she became ill though the task was difficult and LESTER defied expectations and statistics as a survivor of serious medical issues as well. Despite all adversity, LESTER made every effort to attend as many events as possible and was as loyal as could be expected to the BAND. Both LESTER and BELLA will be missed by those who knew them and that includes many beyond the BAND as well.

On March 21, 2011, the March 28, 2011 copy of TIME MAGAZINE reported that the McDonald's Corporation would be retiring the 48 year old RONALD McDONALD making him less important to it's overall marketing plan and placing him in symbolic limbo. It seems that the company felt that he had become disconnected from an increasingly lucrative base of adult customers (who have spurred the success of their specialty coffee line). We are deeply concerned about this and would point out that the increasingly lucrative base of adult customers at some time were all part of a substantially lucrative base of child customers; that the adult base most likely will die out before the child base; and that the current child base will eventually become the future adult base (so why alienate them)! We are also concerned that Ronald McDonald Houses may now turn into halfway houses for those who are addicted to caffeine! As a result we are considering endorsing Ronald McDonald for President in 2012 on the ALL AMERICAN BIG MAC, FRIES, AND APPLE PIE TICKET. In the meantime we expect to see HAPPY MEALS that will consist of a BRAN MUFFIN, a CUP OF COFFEE and an ANTI-DEPRESSANT (assuring the HAPPY aspect of the meal) - which can be UP-SIZED to include an ANTACID and a LAXATIVE!

At our March 24, 2011 rehearsal it was announced that JACK ZIMMERMAN would succeed LESTER OSHRY as ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE BAND. CONGRATULATIONS and BEST WISHES are extended to Jack as he undertakes this roll.

BAND DIRECTOR, ROBERT HALEY, AT THE 2011 ARLINGTON PARADE
On April 17, 2011, we participated in the ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS Patriot's Day Parade. This parade traditionally marks the beginning of our outdoor parading season and it is an event that we all look forward to doing. Weather is always a concern for this parade and we have seen weather of all sorts for it. This year the day was a brisk and windy one but no where near some of the extremes we have previously seen. As a whole it was a nice day and we had a good turnout who provided a good performance which we believe everyone appreciated. Of particular note for this year's parade was the first solo appearance of CHARLIE RIVERS in Oriental Band Uniform manning the large gong. CHARLIE did an exemplary job and we are happy to see that he is enjoying his participation with us. Jon Lapomardo, upon the promise of the prospect of increased Band pay, agreed to take the pictures that you see concerning the parade - good job JON!

JORDAN KRIGEST
On May 12, 2011 news was received by the BAND that the Black Camel had visited the residence of our former BAND MEMBER, JORDAN KRIGEST, on April 18, 2011, and had taken him to the ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND. JORDAN was a long time MEMBER of the BAND who admirably performed in our percussion section up to the time of his retirement, in 1998, from the BAND. JORDAN was always a gentleman and diplomat who struck an impressive figure whenever he took to the streets to participate in our parades and otherwise. Of particular note and perhaps dubious distinction, JORDAN was instrumental in bringing WEBSHEIK(c) into the BAND and their relationship continued long after JORDAN retired from the BAND. JORDAN was constantly interested and genuinely concerned in what was going on with the BAND long after his retirement. A testament to that dedication came in a reported final request of JORDAN to have the BAND play at some future memorial service for him - we are giving due consideration to that request. Memory of JORDAN remains with many of the current MEMBERS of the BAND and it is a favorable memory. We are thankful for the many years of service that JORDAN had with us and appreciated his interest beyond his retirement from the BAND.

JIM HARVEY
On May 17, 2011, our fellow Band Member, JAMES HARVEY, received a JOSEPH WARREN MEDAL from the Grand Lodge Of Massachusetts. The award was presented by the GRAND MASTER and was presented in recognition JIM'S many years of dedication and support for the Fraternity. We CONGRATULATE JIM on this occasion.

On May 26, 2011, word was received that the BLACK CAMEL had visited the residence of a former MEMBER of the BAND, JAMES A. KNOWLTON, and had taken him to the ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND on January 20, 2011. JIM was a long time MEMBER of our percussion section where he did an admirable job. JIM will always be remembered for the infamous day when he held the cymbals a bit too close to himself when he struck them and the aftermath that followed. JIM was, personally, one of the quieter MEMBERS of the BAND and he is fondly remembered by those who knew him.

On May 29, 2011, we participated in the SOMERVILE, MASSACHUSETTS Memorial Day Parade. We continued to have a large turnout for the event and that contributed to another good performance. Despite being on a bus that took all the wrong turns to get to the Parade, we did manage to get there in time. The crowds loved us and we seem to have picked up a few new dancers on the sidelines who also did a commendable job - if only we could figure out how to recruit these people into the BAND! The day was a hot and humid one and the Parade moved along at a very slow pace - which is a bit unusual for this event. Nonetheless, despite a vehement heckler, we had an enjoyable time and believe that our efforts were appreciated by all. We look forward to the Memorial Day Parades that we do and are pleased to be able to contribute to everyone's enjoyment of this Holiday. A brief video of the Parade can be found by clicking on the link below. We come into the video at about the 1:38 mark into the video playing a song called "Six-Ninety-Eight" - Enjoy.

On May 30, 2011, we participated in the WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS Memorial Day Parade and also had a strong turnout for it which contributed to our performance. We were especially pleased to have STEVEN CAPPERS come from MAINE to join us for this performance and to catch up on his doings. STEVE proved that once an Oriental Band Member, Always an Oriental Band Member as he performed admirably even with some of our new tunes. GREAT JOB, STEVE - REMEMBER, REHEARSALS ARE STILL THURSDAY NIGHTS!. We particularly enjoy doing this Parade because it is in our hometown and it gives us an opportunity to contribute to the festivities of the Holiday and thank the Town for putting up with us during the year. Once, again, we put on a very good performance despite an occasional sprinkle (which were quite refreshing) during the Parade and humidity that exceeded that of the previous day. New dancers were also observed along this Parade route and we are convinced that we have to find some way to make them part of the BAND - all suggestions would be welcome. Also of particular note for this Parade was the presence of our entire tambourine section including TOM SHORT, RON HENDERSON, ROD PARKER, and MIKE TUCKER (who has returned to the BAND after a brief sabbatical - welcome back MIKE). Along the route we also noticed one of our currently incapacitated Members, MAURICE KIPNIS, cheering us on. It was nice to see MAURICE and we hope to see him back with us eventually. Below are some pictures from the Parade.

On June 4, 2011, we participated in an ALEPPO CEREMONIAL in WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS. A continuing good turnout of Members produced another excellent performance and the crowd loved it. In addition, someone amongst the powers that be must be reading our website because, no sooner than we wished for the return of MAURICE KIPNIS then, lo and behold, he returned to the BAND for this peformance and assured us that he will be showing up more regularly for our events. It was great to see KIPPY back and he, like the rest of the BAND, performed admirably. Now, not to squander the possibility that someone amongst the powers that may be is reading our website, we would also like to wish for universal peace, harmony, and understanding; cures to all illnesses; health, wealth and prosperity to all and in every endeavor; the knowledge of the universe; all powers and abilities to all; the resolution of all economic and political strife; infinitely sustainable resources; beauty; intelligence and wisdom; the righting of all wrongs and injustices; perfection in every way; and immortality.

On June 25, 2011 we participated in BRAINTREE, MASSACHUSETTS early Fourth of July Parade. It was a rather gray and foreboding day but a good turnout of members assured another crowd pleasing performance. The Parade also marked the initial street performance of MIKE TUCKER on the BASS DRUM. MIKE always adds his own flare to any instrument he plays and the BASS DRUM was no exception for him. MIKE did a great job and we are looking forward to his continuing performances. In the meantime, Richard Lemerise, Jr. is assisting the other drummers and he did a great job there as well. JON LAPOMARDO did an admirable job taking the pictures for the day and the results are shown below.

On July 23, 2011, the BAND held its annual clambake at WARREN'S LOBSTER HOUSE in Kittery, Maine. We have been trying out some alternative sites for this event. The consenus for this year was that WARREN'S was well worth visiting and it may become the regular site for this event which we all look forward to. The day was a hot one and everyone enjoyed going out to eat. The food was quite good and the attendance and camaraderie were exceptional as is always the case when we get together especially with our spouses and other family members and friends. Amongst those attending were STEVE and LINDA CAPPERS whom we enjoy seeing as much as possible, NIKKI KELLEY, and the young daughters of RICHARD LEMERISE, JR. who are always a delight to see. In addition CHARLIE RIVERS attended with one of his daughters and it was enjoyable to meet her - hopes for a new harem member always excites us! Everyone had an enjoyable time and we are already all looking forward to next year's event. Below are a few pictures from that event:

On August 19, 2011, news was received that the Burger King chain had decided to "dethrone" their iconic spokesperson, THE KING. With the demise of RONALD MCDONALD, previously, and now THE KING, we are greatly concerned over the future of the respective fast food emporiums involved as well as for the future of the parties involved. We hope that THE KING has found respite, solace, and sustenance along with RONALD MCDONALD at, perhaps, some sympathetic RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE.

THE KING IS DEAD ... LONG LIVE THE KING!

On August 27, 2011, we participated in the NORTHEAST FIELD DAYS in HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS. A foreboding weather forecast, involving Hurricane Irene, had everyone a bit on edge as to how things were going to be done during the weekend. Fortunately, the weather held off enough to get a NORTHEAST SHRINE ORIENTAL BAND ASSOCIATION (NESOBA) Competition in though the number of participants was minimal because some BANDS were dissuaded from attending due to the weather - resulting in THE ALEPPO ORIENTAL BAND placing FIRST in the Large Band Division and THE MELHA ORIENTAL BAND placing FIRST in the Medium Band Division. The performances by both BANDS were spirited despite the excessive humidity that prevailed. It was truly a pleasure to see THE MELHA BAND perform as well as they did. Our experience with them is that they have had some good years and some not so good years. Based on what we saw this time, we were impressed and look forward to MELHA improving into the BAND that we know they can be and we suspect, absent any setbacks, that will be accomplished in short time. Though there was not a formal DUET COMPETITION, ALEPPO was awarded the Trophy for that by default. Prior to the Competition, at the annual NESOBA MEETING, which was held the day before, RICHARD LEMERISE, JR., from ALEPPO, was elected Second Vice President of NESOBA and RON HENDERSON, also from ALEPPO, assumed the position of First Vice President of NESOBA - our congratulations are extended to both. A large crowd enjoyed the Competition presentations, including several members of the IMPERIAL DIVINE and, to show appreciation to the audience, THE ALEPPO ORIENTAL BAND and THE MELHA ORIENTAL BAND joined together, after the Competition, to do a joint performance of that all time favorite oriental music number: MICKEY MOUSE! Following the Competition, THE ALEPPO ORIENTAL BAND also participated in the NESOBA Grand Parade and put on a pleasing performance for those in attendance. HYANNIS was a very enjoyable experience and those who did not attend really missed out on something special. We would be remiss to not also congratulate all who had anything to do with organizing or executing the various aspects of the event - WELL DONE.

Shortly after the NORTHEAST we participated in the MARLBORO, MASSACHUSETS Labor Day Parade. MARLBORO is always a tremendous Parade and one which we always look forward to and this year was no exception. Our turnout for the Parade was one of the largest we have seen for the year and we were actually happy that a few of the Members were unable to attend - otherwise we would have run out of space and seats on our float. There was a time when we looked at our float and wondered if it was too large for us. Lately we have been wondering if the float is too small for us or if there is a way to better optimize space use on it to accommodate the turnouts we have been experiencing. Needless to say, the large turnout of Members produced another exceptional performance by the BAND which we believe the audience found pleasing. MARLBORO has long been one of the communities and parades that provide us with numerous dancers in the crowd. This year was no exception, even though a long time exceptional dancer was not observed, new talent was spotted in the crowd and it is hoped that they will continue with their enthusiasm.

On October 15, 2011, we participated in the EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS HOMECOMING PARADE. Spectacular New England Fall weather and a large turnout of members along with an enthusiastic crowd made for a pleasing and satisfying performance and event. It was as if the sun, the moon, and the stars were all aligned properly for this event. The Parade also marked the end of our outdoor parading season for the year and brought our 60th year of outdoor performances to a memorable conclusion. During the winter break we had purchased what we thought was a reasonable and adequate number of new chairs for our float but, with the turnouts we have been experiencing, we will now be looking to add to the number of chairs before next season. It is our sincere hope and wish that every Oriental Band should be faced with such a situation and we are grateful that we are blessed with such an issue. That also contributes to the enthusiasm with which we look forward to next year's parading season. Come out and see us perform - you won't be disappointed.

On November 12, 2011 we participated in an ALEPPO CEREMONIAL in Wilmington, Massachusetts. The turnout for the event was another strong one but slightly less than average in number for the year which may have been a result of the late schedule of events for the day. Nonetheless, we put on a very credible performance which we believe was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. This event marked our final performance for this, OUR SIXTIETH YEAR, and brought the year to a resounding and satisfying conclusion.

On November 17, 2011, the BAND held its final rehearsal for the year and will be taking a break until JANUARY 12, 2012 when we will return to prepare for the ANNUAL ALEPPO INSTALLATION CEREMONIAL which is to be held on JANUARY 28, 2012 in WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.

On December 11, 2011 the BAND held its annual HOLIDAY PARTY at the DANVERSPORT (MASSACHUSETTS) YACHT CLUB which was a new venue for this event and one that we very much enjoyed. A good turnout of members - all in Holiday spirit - made for an enjoyable event which brought our 60th year to its conclusion.

Our Thanks and Best Wishes go to all who have cheered us on from the sidelines this year - your support, enthusiasm, and satisfaction are all things that we value far more than you can imagine. Please keep it up and come out and see us perform next year as well.

In general, things went well for the BAND, again, this year - we continue to experience some of the best turnouts for performances that we have seen in years and our membership is holding its own. We continue to be doing something right and the results are showing.

Our parade schedule continues to develop and any changes will be posted.

ADDITIONAL NEWS WILL BE PROVIDED WHEN RECEIVED. CHECK BACK FREQUENTLY FOR UPDATES.

With all the dire predictions for the year, 2012, given that it is also an election year and a leap year as well, we do approach it cautiously but remain confident in our ability to persist and perform well. In the meantime, we hope that our performances will provide, at least temporary, satisfying distractions from the ominous predictions for and the other circumstances surrounding the year.

Our BEST WISHES are extended to all for a GREAT 2012.
