ALEPPO 2012 POTENTATE - PETER A. SIMMONS
Following our Winter/Holiday recess, we resumed our rehearsals on January 12, 2012 as we began our SIXTY-FIRST YEAR as a Unit.
Given all the dire predictions concerning the year and the facts that it is an election year and a leap year, we approach it with cautious
optimism but confident in our ability to satisfactorily perform and entertain and enthusiastic to do so. We, nonetheless, being respectful of the wisdom of the MAYAN society and culture and others,
include our Home Page countdown clock on this
page this year as a courtesy so that all may be well informed.

On January 10, 2012, word was received that the BLACK CAMEL had visited a dear friend of ASOB and the ORIENTAL BAND COMMUNITY
in general as well as some Members of our BAND and had taken him to the ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND. We join in mourning the loss of
GERALD (JERRY) SUTTNER from ISMAILIA SHRINE. JERRY was a truly dedicated, sincere, concerned, and
involved Member of the ORIENTAL BAND COMMUNITY and his loss will be felt by many. At the same time we wish the very best to his
charming and equally dedicated wife, JO-ANNE, and Thank her for sharing JERRY with us. JERRY was a quiet behind-the-scenes type
of person who, through that approach and his tireless efforts, was far more effective than even he ever imagined. He personified
every virtue imaginable and was rightfully respected by all that knew him for any number of reasons. The ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND
has acquired yet another wonderful addition to its fold.
On January 28, 2012, we participated in the Annual Installation Ceremonial held at the ALEPPO SHRINE in
WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS. We congratulate the new DIVAN that was installed on their respective positions and look forward
to working with them throughout the year. We would like to express our appreciation for the efforts of the DIVAN Members
and wish them all, individually and collectively, a successful and enjoyable year. We would also like to make note of the fact
that BAND Member, DENNIS REEBEL, was installed as CHIEF RABBAN of ALEPPO and, if elected and installed next year, will be the first
ALEPPO POTENTATE to come from our ranks which is something that we are all looking forward to. In addition, BAND Member and past BAND Director,
ROBERT (ROB) JOHNSON, was installed as MARSHAL for ALEPPO. ROB has been pre-occupied with some family matters over the past few years
and has been unable to particpate in many of our events. However, we are told that the matters are coming to fruition and completion
and that, even though the demands of being MARSHAL may be considerable, the possibility remains that ROB will be able to participate
with us a bit more in the future. We are all looking forward to the fulfillment of that prospect. In the interim, we congratulate both
DENNIS and ROB on their accomplishments. We would also like to take the opportunity to congratulate HARLAN WOODS on his appointment to the
position of Second Ceremonial Master of ALEPPO. For the Ceremonial we had a modest but reasonably balanced turnout which was more than
sufficient to provide a satisfactory performance that pleased the audience.
On January 28, 2012 we were surprised to receive hard copy editions of the January, 2012 NA KHABAR magazine from ASOB
(The Association of Shrine Oriental Bands) contrary to a decision reported in the September, 2010 NA KHABAR
which essentially terminated further hard copies of the Magazine in deference to making future copies of the magazine
available in electronic format. The arguments given for the decision in September, 2010 included 1. maintaining financial
stability in order for the organization to remain viable; 2. termination of business of the publisher; 3. improved timely
delivery of the magazine; 4. the prospect of increasing interest in and throughout the organization; 5. a "green" initiative;
6. the prospect of more space
becoming available online for articles and pictures, etc.; 7. an effort to replenish funds; 8. the prospect of reducing
costs by publishing electronically; and 9. the prospect of eventually increasing the number of issues to be published in a year.
Though we were
disappointed to hear of the September, 2010 decision, we nonetheless respected it. Now, however, comes the newly printed hard
copy of the January, 2012 NA KHABAR and we are wondering what to make of it.
1. Should we no longer be interested in maintaining the financial stability of the organization! 2. Should we not care about
the viability of the organization! 3. How was the publisher who was reported to be no longer in business able to produce the
latest magazine! 4. We also noted that the electronic copy of the magazine was not made available until approximately
February 13, 2012 and question its timeliness as opposed to the printed copy which was received on January 28, 2012!
5. We wonder if there is no longer an objective to increase interest in and throughout the organization! 6. We wonder what
happened to the "green" initiative! 7. We also wonder how costs were reduced or funds replenished by
the hard copy publication! Our understanding was that the September, 2010 decision had determined that "the NaKhabar [would]
no longer be published in paper format" and that, even if someone had independently volunteered to pay or independent
funds were raised to have a copy published, that was prohibited by the decision as well. 8. We also wonder if there is no longer
an interest in increasing the number of issues to be published each year!
Just as we received criticism for our disappointment with the September, 2010 decision we will undoubtedly be criticized for
being surprised to have received a hard copy of an edition published after the September, 2010 decision and contrary to the
decision. WE ARE ONLY THE MESSENGERS and we would hope that would be respected and that, if our concerns are to be responded to,
that it been done so constructively and responsively to the matters raised. KINDLY NOTE - RESPONSES TO ANY ISSUES SHALL BE DEEMED
TO BE CONSENT TO PUBLISH THOSE RESPONSES HEREIN.
On March 29, 2012, TOM SHORT returned to practise after having been out for several months. It was great to see him back and he
took up just as if he had not been away. TOM still has some time before he will be fully recuperated from his ordeal but we are
hopeful that he will be back parading with us by the end of the season - if not sooner.
On April 15, 2012 we participated in the ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS Patriot's Day Parade commemorating the Battles of Lexington and
Concord, Massachusetts which came at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Arlington borders Lexington and its citizens also
participated in the skirmishes of the day and also played an independent role during the early conflict. Paul Revere also made his
way along the streets of Arlington to alarm the citizens. In fact, the route that the parade takes is, in part, along the path
that Paul Revere
took so many years ago. We had a good turnout of members and all went reasonably well. Our performance was good and we continued to
entice some of the audience members into street dancing participation. Our float, having had some issues with it, which were
apparently
aggravated during the dormancy of the winter months, was put back into shape and we are hopeful that we will not have any other
problems with it for the remainder of the year. In addition we have finally been able to come up with some
decorative banners for the float and everyone agreed that they added something to our presence. We are hopng to add some additional
banners in the future. Though the parade went well and our performance was good, we were surprised and disappointed to see increasing
discontent
with our presence in the parade. It has been some 10+ years since the events of 9/11 and we are fully appreciative of the efforts
and sacrifices made by many in various Middle Eastern theatres but we would think that all would recognize that we are simply a
bunch of Shriners who are parading for a good cause. Apparently not everyone either sees that or agrees and it has gotten to the
point where some of those who heckle or jeer us are becoming more bellicose and potentially more belligerent. In some communities,
it might be expected, but Arlington is not one of those communities and to see it in a community such as Arlington is a bit
troublesome for us.
Such experiences are causing us to re-evaluate the nature of our physical presence and in order to deal with the matter we are
considering a uniform change and hope that move will be sufficient to deal with the issues that linger.
On April 18, 2012, word was received from our GUEST BOOK sponsor, that they had terminated support of their GUEST BOOKS on or
about February 2, 2012. Accordingly, our GUEST BOOK is essentially no longer functional and we will be looking for a substitute
which we hope to have in place in due course. We regret any inconvenience that this may cause to anyone.
On May 10, 2012 we took time out to do our Annual Business Meeting. The issues before us were of significant importance and all of
the Members were in attendance. Paramount was the issue of changing the nature of our presence in light of increasing disparaging
comments and reactions from some side line viewers which had been escalating over the past few years. Safety being of primary
concern, it was decided that we should shift our presence to one of being more in the nature of being "genies" rather than more
traditional nomads of the desert. We are hoping to effectuate this change as soon as possible and are hopeful that it will meet
with the satisfaction of those in whom our traditonal appearance caused some concerns. We assure everyone that our new appearance
will not affect the nature or the quality of our performances. We also appear to be experiencing some difficulties with our float
and we continue to evaluate that situation and are hopeful that the situation will not impact on any of our scheduled appearances.
Our Annual Clam Bake was scheduled and all other matters were reviewed. It was one of the most constructive Annual Meetings that
we have had in a long time and we feel like we accomplished something for the betterment of all.
Our ANNUAL CLAM BAKE is scheduled to be held on August 11, 2012 at Warren's Lobster House in Maine.
On May 27, 2012, despite a number of conflicts for Members, a good sized BAND participated in the SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS
Memorial Day Parade and we did so with our new uniforms. As a result of our experience last year in Somerville, we were
approaching the Parade with a bit of concern as to crowd reaction. Those concerns were rapidly put to rest as the large crowd
readily embraced our new presence. Dancing girls, singing, picture taking, and cheers from the crowd coupled with a spectacular
New England Spring day made for an enjoyable return to Somerville. We believe that everyone enjoyed our performance and we enjoyed
the reception we received and are looking forward to returning to Somerville next year without any reservations or concerns.
We were also pleased that some difficulites we had been experiencing with our float seemed to have been fixed. Some pictures from
Somerville follow:

On May 28, 2012 another good sized BAND participated in the WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS Memorial Day Parade. Despite ominous weather
threats of residual heavy rains from Hurricane Beryl everything seemed to be holding out for another great day for the Parade.
But other problems loomed. Upon arriving at the assembly area of the parade, we noticed that our float was not there and a few
quick telephone calls later resulted in our being informed that our driver had over-slept! Panic prevailed until an alternative
driver was found. Eventually the float showed up at the last minute and we had to scramble to assemble things as the Parade was
passing us by. With the deft and skill of gazelles, we speedily put everything into place but the circmstances required that we
get in line a little further back than usual - undoubtedly saving the best for last! Regardless, everything else went off well
except for an accident which resulted in our taking down a light pole as our float rounded and failed to negotiate a fairly sharp
turn. Light fixture pieces fell to the ground around us and the scramble on the float in order to avoid them, as well as the jolt
of the contact, resulted in some physical damage to some of our Members. Banged knees and sore backs were the rule of the day
after the Parade but nothing seemed serious. In spite of the excitement, we put on another fabulous perfomance which was
appreciated by the audience who also showed their appreciation for our new uniforms. As usual, STEVE CAPPERS came from MAINE to
participate with us and we thank him for making the trip and for his performance. We understand that STEVE has retired and we
would also like to remind him that, subject to our Annual Schedule and an occasional need to cancel practise, we still rehearse
every THURSDAY night at 6:30 PM and that one-and-a-half to two hour commutes to practise are no excuse for not attending. What
better way can there be to enjoy one's retirement than by regularly participating in Oriental Band events!
On June 2, 2012, a small but adequate contingent of Band Members participated in an ALEPPO CEREMONIAL in WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
The weather was a bit dreary, wet, and cool but, for an indoor event, that was ideal. Our turnout was affected by a variety of
things and, because of the mix of talent that did attend, we were unable to participate in the traditional Parade and Review of
the Units. Everyone continued to express satisfaction with our new uniforms and it looks like we have done well in that respect.
Everyone also enjoyed
our performance for the Initiation Part of the Ceremonial.
On June 9, 2012 a moderate sized BAND performed in the 350th ANNIVERSARY PARADE in MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS. It was a spectacular
New England late Spring Day which brought out a large and enthusiastic audience. Before moving to MAINE, STEVE CAPPERS lived in
MILTON
and he made it a point to come and participate with us for the event. It is always nice to see Steve in action and we thank him
for joining us for the day. We also remind
him, again, that retirement only means that he has more time to spend with us; that we continue to rehearse on Thursday
evenings; and that two hour commutes to practise are not excuses for not attending. Our perfomance in MILTON was well received as
were our new uniforms. We are pleased that we made the uniform change and are especially pleased by the response it has received.
The
parade was an exceptionally long one (estimates were as high as 3.5 to 4.0 miles - an average parade being 2.0 miles or less) but
our decision to go to a float (which had been repaired following some minor damage which had occurred in the Wilmington, MA Parade)
several years ago did not make that an issue. We guess
that the people in MILTON might have gotten a little carried away with their enthusiasm in planning events for the occsasion - and
we fully understand and appreciate that. 350 Years is quite an accomplishment and one that few other locations in the Country can
claim or top. For our
part, we will be looking forward to the 375th and 400th Anniversaries in Milton and hope that they will invite us back. Despite its
length, this was one of the better planned, organized, and executed new parades we have participated in for quite some time and,
miraculously, despite this being an election year, there were few politicians to be seen. Our
hats are off to everyone who was involved with this parade in any fashion whatsoever - GOOD JOB.
On August 2, 2012, JOSEPH TROFIMOW joined the BAND. JOE had been an anticipated Member for a while, so we were all happy to see him
finally join. After spending a little time in our salt mines learning the tunes, we expect JOE to be a worthy contributor to the
BAND. Welcome aboard JOE.
On August 2, 2012, the BAND received a correspondence from GREG MOISTER, one of our former MEMBERS who moved to Florida several years
ago.
GREG informed us that he had joined ARABA SHRINE and had recently become a member of their FLINTSTONE UNIT. We do not warrant
or vouch for the
sanity of our present, future, or past members. We do, however, assure everyone that we are a fun loving bunch and a very dedicated
group when it comes to Shrine matters and GREG'S continued involvement is a testament to that. GREG also indicated to us that he
anticipates joining the ARABA SHRINE CEREMONIAL ORIENTAL BAND shortly - proving that, once an Oriental Band Person, always an Oriental
Band Person. It was great to hear from GREG and be
brought up to date on what he is doing. We respectfully remind him that it is a short airplane trip from Florida to Boston and that
BAND rehearsals are still held on Thursday nights! Our best wishes are extended to GREG as are wishes for continued SHRINE enjoyment
for him and we also hope that he will keep in touch.

On August 5, 2012, a good size group of BAND Members made their way to NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS to participate in their
annual Portuguese Feast Parade. For most of the Northeast it was one of those dog days of summer - hot and humid and neither fit
for man or beast
- but, being near the coast provided some abatement of that situation for those in New Bedford. All in all, it was a very nice parade
as it usually is. The crowd was large and enthusiastic and the parade was well organized and moved along swiftly. Everyone enjoyed
our performance and presence and we put on a good perfomance which was enhanced by our sounds bouncing off buildings along the way.
We have occasionally considered putting amplifiers on our float, but there definitely was no need for them in New Bedford.
Despite our turnout
and our performance, lately few Parades have been without incident. This time, after being driven some 2 hours to New Bedford, our
pre-parade refreshments were nowhere in sight. Apparently the ALEPPO STEWARDS, who are responsible for such matters, forgot that there
was a Parade in New Bedford scheduled for the 5th! Alas, we all eventually made it back - just a little hungrier for the experience -
and have been promised that such an occurrence will not be repeated.
This year has seen more conflicts arise amongst our Members than usual, nonetheless, on August 11, 2012, a strong contingent of
Members, Spouses, Significant Others, Friends and Family made their way to WARREN'S LOBSTER HOUSE in Kittery, Maine to partake of our
Annual Summer Get-Together. All had a good and enjoyable time and all are looking forward to next year's Summer Outing.
On September 3, 2012, a large turnout of Band Members made their way to MARLBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS to participate in their annual
Labor Day Parade. Marlborough is traditionally a very large parade and one that is well organized and executed and this year was no
exception. Beautiful late summer weather contributed to our enjoyment of the parade and, despite the traditional showing of
politicians, everything ran smoothly. As has been the case, more often than not, this parade had some unique highlights to it as well.
The parade marked the first parade performance of Band Member, JOSEPH TROFIMOW. Joe performed admirably and well and both he and we
enjoyed his participation. This parade is always well attended and another large audience appreciated our presence and our
performance and we enjoyed performing for them. The parade also provided an opportunity to get some pictures of us in our new
uniforms and they follow below and below them are some links to some of our performance for the day. We believe that we set a new
record for the number (61) of songs played by us in a parade and it was our pleasure to do so for such a large and appreciative crowd who
lined the parade route from start to finish with depth in their ranks.

On September 14 and 15, 2012, The Band participated in the events surrounding the
Northeast Shrine Association (NESA)Field Days which were held in Bangor, Maine. Part
of the events included the Annual Meeting of the Northeast Shrine Oriental Band
Association (NESOBA) and associated competitions. At the Annual Meeting of NESOBA,
held on Spetember 14, 2012, Band Member RON HENDERSON
was sworn in as First Vice President of NESOBA and Band Member RICHARD LEMERISE, JR. became
Second Vice President of the Organization. Our Congratulation are extended to both on this occasion.
The NESOBA Band competition took place on September 15, 2012. The challenges were few this year and that
proved to be a bit disappointing. Nonetheless, the ALEPPO ORIENTAL BAND continued its dominance in
the Northeast and won a First Place Award for its Band Competition and it retained the DUET AWARD
(known as the Maple Leaf Award)for the performance of BOB HALEY and JACK ZIMMERMAN. The ALEPPO ORIENTAL BAND
has won this award ever time every year that it has been available and the Band has competed for it. We
would eventually like to see the award renamed to simply be "THE ALEPPO AWARD"! While in Bangor, we came upon
an errant being who, from his obvious good taste in clothing and dress, we believe to be a long lost Member of our Band.
Please see the picture below
and you will see who we are talking about (unfortunately no one got the individual's name or other details).
We are continuing to post video segments of our performances to YOUTUBE and the link provided below includes
ALL of the video we have posted to date including some new ones for our performance in Bangor - we hope that
you enjoy the videos.

On September 22, 2012 a large number of Band Members participated in the EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS Homecoming Parade.
The crowd was enthusiastic and receptive and they enjoyed our performance as well. With as large a turnout as we had,
the only difficulty we had was finding enough seats and space on our float to accommodate everyone, but we did manage
to do that and our performance was another crowd pleasing one. As with previous parades throughout the year, this one
was marked by a bit of excitement too as the buses taken to Everett were re-assigned to different waiting spots than
notice was given of for our return trip to Wilmington - without anyone being told the details! So we followed the directions
and returned to the designated spot to await the buses and waited and waited. Were it not for the efforts of Aleppo Chief Rabban,
Dennis Reebel, and Assistant Rabban, Richard Doherty, we might not have gotten back to Wilmington at all and we thank the two for
their efforts and assistance in the matter - all of which we believe bodes well for the next few years especially given the manner
and alacrity with which they dealt with the matter. Once, again, the Stewarts let us down by not having the traditional after-parade
refreshments available, but, though the early morning weather was a bit drizzly, the weather for the parade itself was that of an
ideal early Fall day and the refreshments were not missed. The crowd, though less numerous than in some other localities more than
made up for the smaller numbers with a warmth that we were pleased to see. While waiting to step off (we were in the last division
of the parade - leaving the best for the last, again) some of the sideline audience actually came onto our float and physically
embraced us and thanked us for being there - the pictures below give proof to our statements and are indicative of the type of
response we generally get even in other parades. In addition, the parade participants were well represented by members of the
Military, the State Police Equestrian Team, and Politicians. It was about as well balanced a Parade as they come and some
pictures of the participants is included below as well. We enjoyed the Parade and believe that everyone enjoyed our performance
as well. We have posted some videos for this parade as well and reiterate our link to our videos as well below and hope that
you will enjoy them.

On September 29, 2012 the BAND participated in the Opening Day Parade of the TOPSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS Fair. The day
started off dreary and drizzly and we originally planned to do the Parade in civilian attire in order to not damage
our new head pieces. As the morning moved on and it got closer to the Parade, the weather improved and BAND MEMBER
RON HENDERSON arrived and had an ingenious idea as to how to protect our head pieces - suffice it to say that shower
caps can be used to protect more than just ones hair. With the shower caps in place we did some last minute changes at
the facilites provided for us and then we moved out. TOPSFIELD is an invitation only event and we feel privileged to
be invited to participate in it. The FAIR is billed as the oldest Agricultural Fair in the Country and it very much
lives up to its reputation as such. We do thank everyone who is involveed in getting us to do this Parade and who
also provide facilities, food, and transportation to the beginning (from our dressing area) of the Parade for us.
As usual, the Parade was highlighted by the iconic Fair truck, politicians, and a host of other parading units. The
turnout of units seemed a little less than normal and that was probably because of the weather predictions. It
should also be noted that we were unable to do this Parade last year because of a Shrine conflict and we were very
much looking forward to doing it this year. We are unable to use our float for this Parade so only those Members who
can still march participate and so far we are able to still be able to put a good marching Band on the streets. It
is also made that much easier to do because this Parade tends to be one of the shorter ones we do. Our performance
was spectacular, as usual, and was highlighted by MIKE TUCKER assuming duties for the day as a Gong Player and putting on his
dancing show for the crowd at the head of the Band - everyone loved it. Other highlights of the FAIR were the inclusion of
representatives of the ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (who have a tremendous presence and put on a tremendous show) and
representatives from the USS CONSTITUTION (OLD IRONSIDES) who are commemorating the BICENTENNIAL of THE WAR OF 1812 and
the participation and role of the boat in that event - those and much more make the FAIR a very enjoyable experience.
Accordingly, after the Parade, a number of Members stayed around and took in the FAIR. Pictures for the day follow:

We concluded our Regular Parade Season by participating in the EAST BOSTON (MASSACHUSETTS) COLUMBUS DAY PARADE on October 7, 2012.
What a Parade and what a spectacular finish to what was already a good year. The day started off fairly warm for the time
of year but there had been forecasts of cooling down and rain which had us all concerned. As we drove to the assembly area
for the Parade the clouds kept rolling in and the temperatures dropped considerably - clearly a cold front had gone through
and had brought some potentially inclement weather with it, but the rains held off. We arrived at the assembly area and parked
beside our float and just behind the refreshment van and a replica of the BAT MOBILE - so all was looking good for the day
(how can you go wrong with refreshments and the presence of the BAT MOBILE). To make matters even better, while mingling with
the crowd, we came upon QUEEN ISABELLA who was accompanied by a man who we thought was KING FERDINAND but whom we were told
was CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS and we got the low down on the true meaning of the events that had transpired some 520 years previously.
Apparently QUEEN ISABELLA has never been happy with the fact that she gave CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS a tidy sum of money and all he
did was discover America. COLUMBUS, himself, stated similar disappointment and indicated (in jest or otherwise) that his
objective in making the trip was really to find new sources of illicit drugs and markets to sell them in (for all we know
he may have succeeded beyond his wildest dreams)! Who are we to question such personal inputs! But for a true portrayal of part of
the events, one is encouraged to read A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE DESTRUCTION OF THE INDIES by BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS. In addition
to QUEEN ISABELLA and CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, there were a fair number of politicians in the Parade many of whom we met over
the course of the parading season and some of whom actually came over to our float and greeted us for the day. In fact a local
television station took some footage of one such meeting and broadcast it in their evening news for the day (look for a copy of
the broadcast in our YOUTUBE link below). Additionally,
MINNIE MOUSE, POOH - THE BEAR, and SANTA CLAUS (complete with sleigh and reindeer) were seen in the Parade and were a stark
reminder of the change of season and the upcoming Holiday Season and all the shopping that had to be undertaken before then.
After waiting around for over a hour, we finally stepped off and found ourselves amidst a throng of enthusiastic revelers - these
people were out to party.
There were times in the Parade when we were actually drowned out by the response and applause of the crowd and were not even
able to hear ourselves on the float - it was an incredible response, complete with dancing ladies performing as well as any
we have ever seen and some dancing men who were doing a credible job as well. The Parade itself is one of the longer ones
we do and the route takes us under some bridges or overpasses and the echoes experienced there made us sound like a 100 piece
Band. Though we felt a few sprinkles during the Parade, the rain held off until exactly the end of the Parade for us so it
was - or would have been a perfect climax to our Parading Season were it not for two events that marred the day. Not everyone
takes the bus to our parades, some drive themselves and are given driving and parking directions to do so. They are also
supplied with a shuttle service (when needed) from their parking area to the assembly area of the Parade. In the case of East
Boston a shuttle service is necessary however, for some reason, those who drove to the Parade had to wait inordinately to be
transferred - somehow the shuttle service was not as it should have been. Normally, we would not make note of it, but for EAST
BOSTON we have a number of Members who do find it more convenient to drive to the Parade and had they not made it to the PARADE, our
performance would have, undoubtedly, been diminished accordingly and that would been disappointing to us and the crowd.
Fortunately this situation was remedied and everyone made it to the Parade. The second incident that marred the day was a bit
more blatant and egregious. When we pass the reviewing stands of Parades, a representative from Aleppo traditionally announces
the various Aleppo Units as they pass by. East Boston was no exception to that rule - however when the Oriental Band approached
the reviewing stands, the announcer indicated words to the effect that "there were no terrorists amongst us!" The crowd at the
East Bost Parade is and always has been a very charged, excited, and excitable group of people. In past years things have actually
been thrown from the
sidelines amidst all the excitement. That has toned down a bit as the very character of East Boston is changing over time
nonetheless there is no reason to tempt those conditions. Over the past several years and even more so over the past year
we have noted and responded to concerns, comments, and gestures made by our audiences as to our presence and we have tried
to responsibly address those matters by even changing our physical presence and costumes to do so. Masonic teaching urges us
to "circumscribe our passions" and we were quite affronted by the inability of the announcer to do so. Later the announcer
drove back with us on the bus and did apologize for this oversight and tried to explain it as an effort to be humorous.
Unfortunately, nowadays, no one apparently appreciates such callous humor or insensitivity - nor do we and we would question
whether anyone so inclined to do so should serve as a spokesperson for any organization or event. Other than these issues,
the EAST BOSTON PARADE was a fabulous climax to a great Parading Season for us. Be sure to check out our YOUTUBE link below for
