ALEPPO 2013 POTENTATE
DENNIS E. (THE MENACE) REEBEL
Following our Winter/Holiday recess and having survived the dire predictions and election
activity of last year,
we resumed our rehearsals on January 3, 2013 as we began our SIXTY-SECOND YEAR as a Unit. We are particularly
pleased and proud to
note that a MEMBER of THE BAND, DENNIS REEBEL (who we affectionately and respectfully refer to
as: "DENNIS THE MENACE")
has become the POTENTATE of ALEPPO. We warned him that, if he did not attend practice more often, something
like this could happen but
he just wouldn't listen! We are, nonetheless, excited by his accomplishment and wish DENNIS a great year and
look forward to working
with him during the course of this potentially enjoyably, productive,
and constructively MISCHIEVOUS (in the fun sense) year.

On January 10, 2013 we received hard printed copies of the ASOB (The Association of Shrine Oriental Bands) Magazine, NA KHABAR. Over two years
ago it was voted by ASOB that the publication was only to be done in electronic form. With the current hard printed copy there have been
two exceptions to that vote - without any indication that the vote was appropriately overturned or altered in any fashion. In addition the
current printed copy listed a "Summary of Changes to the By-Laws" [of ASOB] and that would be fine and dandy if those proposed Changes had
ever been properly presented for consideration, discussion, and vote - but we are unaware that such procedures ever occurred. As such we are
not sure that the By-Laws Changes were properly presented for consideration or properly implemented. We are uncertain of the implications,
if any, of such conduct and raise it so that those who read this page may be aware.
On January 26, 2013, we participated in the Aleppo Ceremonial in Wilmington, Massachusetts. It is at this Ceremonial that the
Officers of Aleppo are installed for the year. Because a MEMBER OF THE BAND (Dennis Reebel) was installed as Potentate, we were given the
honor or serving as the HONOR GUARD for his entrance to be installed. After the installation we were also given the privilege of doing
a brief celebratory performance which was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. Having the auditorium to ourselves to perform in and having
a strong turnout for the day, we were able to put on a tremendous and thunderous performance which reverberated throughout the auditorium
to the pleasure of all who were in attendance. It was truly a spectacular performance and one that was befitting of the occasion.
We would also like to welcome NOBLE ROBERT HAVENER as Second Ceremonial Master on the Aleppo Divan Line. We wish him the best in his new
Shrine Role and look forward to seeing him progress along the line.
On February 9, 2013, despite our efforts to participate at the Potentate's Ball, the BLIZZARD OF 2013, Declarations of a State of Emergency,
and the banning of private cars on the road way all conspired to preclude this performance. We were disappointed at the turn of events but
this was a matter beyond our control. We continue to wish the POTENTATE the best throughout the year.
On March 14, 2013 our Annual Meeting was held with a good number of Members in attendance. All was found to be in order and a discussion of
pending performances was also undertaken. It looks like another busy but fun year for us and we urge everyone to come out and see us perform.
On April 14, 2013, we commenced our Parade Schedule by participating in the ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS PATRIOT'S DAY PARADE. We
continued to have a good turnout of Members for the event and our performance reflected that and was appreciated by all.
Overall it was a good Parade though it was a bit chillier and windier than recent Patriot's Day Parades and it tended to stop
and start a bit more frequently than usual. For some unusual reason Spring is late coming to the Northeast this year. By now,
lawns are usually set to go and are greening up but this year it seems like no one and nothing wants to arise from its Winter
hibernation and rest. It is inevitable that it will happen
but it definitely has taken its time this year and we hope that it does warm up by the time of our next Parade and that
the weather will be
favorable to us for the duration of the Parading Season.
On April 15, 2013, we were surprised and disappointed to hear of the tragic circumstances that surrounded
THE BOSTON MARATHON. We wonder in
amazement as to what such conduct is a harbinger of - especially for any crowd related endeavors - and we are concerned that,
eventually, the
outcome may not be favorable for such undertakings - though we do hope otherwise. We also all hope for a speedy resolution
of the matter and
wish the best to those who were directly impacted upon by this event.
A variety of factors and a bit of confusion kept us from doing the NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Memorial Day Parade on May 19, 2013.
On May 26, 2013, we participated in the SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS Memorial Day Parade and continued
to have a strong turnout of members to do so. The weather was ominous and foreboding and Somerville
has always had an elusive end to its Parade so we all approached it with a bit of trepidation but our concerns
were for not. Unlike many years, the Parade went off smoothly and moved at a fairly reasonable pace and
the few sprinkles that were experienced were more refreshing than anything else. We know that we put on a good
performance because of the many new onlookers who took to dancing to our music which is always an enjoyable
thing to see. One elderly lady took the prize for best dancer this year and we will be looking forward to seeing
her on the sidelines next year.
On May 22, 2013, NORA BLAIR HOLT was delivered to the HOLT family becoming the fifth grandchild of Band Member
Eric Holt and his wife, Sheila. Congratulations are extended to the family who are also reminded that it is never
too early to instill the virtues of Oriental Band Music in anyone.
On May 27, 2013, we participated in the WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS Memorial Day Parade and had a strong turnout for
that as well. In the past Steve Cappers has come from Maine to participate in this event however this year he did
not do so. We all look forward to seeing Steve and trust that he had a good reason for not participating with us and
that all is well with him and his wife, LINDA. Again we put on a crowd pleasing performance punctuated with bystanders
dancing in the streets which we enjoy seeing. The change in our uniforms has been well received and, at this parade,
a young lady came up to JACK ZIMMERMAN and, liking him to a genie in the new uniform, asked him to grant her three
wishes (we are not sure but we think that Jack is still working on that)! If only it were that easy! As usual,
we take particular pleasure in doing this Parade as a way of thanking Wilmington, our home town, for putting up
with us during the rest of the year. We will be back next year and hope that STEVE will join us then
- if not sooner. Some pictures from the Wilmington Parade include the following.

On June 3, 2013, word was received that the BLACK CAMEL had visited the TERLEMEZIAN oasis on March 22, 2013 and had taken former
BAND MEMBER, ARTHUR TERLEMEZIAN, to the ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND. Arthur was one of the quieter Members of the Band but
a good performer. Arthur retired from the BAND several years ago and many of the current Members may not recall him but,
those that do, will fondly remember and miss him. THE ETERNAL ORIENTAL BAND has gained another wonderful addition.
On June 8, 2013 the BAND participated in a Ceremonial at the Aleppo Shrine facilities in Wilmington, Massachusetts. A good turnout
again produced a crowd pleasing performance.
Despite some health issues, BAND MEMBERS CHARLIE RIVERS and JIM HARVEY have recovered reasonably well and are getting back into the
swing of things with us.
On June 23, 2013 a modest turnout of Members participated in the MILLBURY, MASSACHUSETTS Bicentennial Parade. The weather was fine and
the novelty of the Parade location as well as the enthusiasm of the crowd made the Parade a pleasurable digression from our
regular parading routine. All had a great time in Millbury which was reflected in our performance and the gratitude shown from the
audience. An independent YOUTUBE posting covering the portion of the Parade in which we are shown performing may be
found at:

We come into the picture at roughly the 14 minute mark.
We very much enjoyed doing the MILLBURY PARADE and are looking forward to returning to MILLBURY
for their TRICENTENNIAL PARADE - if not sooner. WE also came home with a Bicentennial Banner given in
appreciation of our performance and as a memorial of the day. The Banner now adorns our Band Room amongst
many other artifacts of prior performances.
On July 30, 2013, Band Member and Potentate, DENNIS REEBEL, invited the BAND to his BLUE LODGE for its
ANNUAL STEAK DINNER - you can just imagine the difficulty we had with accepting this invitation!
So a good turnout
of Members went to MARLBORO, MASSACHUSETTS to perform for the LODGE. We were warmly received and appreciated
everything about this visit. It was a true pleasure to perform for all who were there and we think that
they appreciated it as well. It was also a delight to see DENNIS pitch in to grill the steaks to perfection
and were disappointed that we could not tear him away from those duties and convince him to participate with
us during the evening. It seems that (as he should)
he is taking this POTENTATE stuff seriously. The food was exceptional and few were able to finish the enormous
steaks brought before us. Despite a slight mishap, everything went reasonably well and we are hoping to be
able to add this to our annual agenda (and will be starving ourselves over the next few months in anticipation of
returning). A BIG THANK goes to DENNIS for arranging this outing and to all who
participated in any fashion whatsoever.
After considerable discussion, it was determined that we will not be participating in the NORTHEAST SHRINE ORIENTAL
BAND competition to be held in CORNWALL, ONTARIO. Our best wishes go to all who do compete there.
Though we will not be competing in CORNWALL, BAND MEMBER, RON HENDERSON, will be making the trip to CORNWALL to
be installed as PRESIDENT of The Northeast Shrine Oriental Band. We congratulate RON on this achievement and wish
him the best during the term of his Office.

On August 17, 2013, The BAND held its annual summer get together at Warren's Lobster House Restaurant in
Kittery, Maine. Good food and good company made for another enjoyable event for all who attended. We all look
forward to another successful outing for our traditional Holiday Party in December and next summer for this
event.
On August 24, 2013 Band Member, JONATHON LAPOMARDO'S wedding was held at the Leicester Country Club and,
though the BAND
did not attend, we were there in spirit and wish JON and his new Wife the VERY BEST. We would also like to
remind Jon that, with wedding planning out of the way, he no longer has any excuse to not attend practice
more regularly.
On September 2, 2013, despite some ominous weather predictions and overcast skies, a large contingent of BAND
Members (including Jon Lapomardo - back from his honeymoon)
made their way to MARLBORO, MASSACHUSETTS to participate in their Labor Day Parade. Along the way brief
showers did little to deter our enthusiasm - BUT, when our arrival in MARLBORO was greeted by a strong rainfall,
we all became a bit concerned as to what the day had in store for us. Shortly after our arrival the rain abated
and things were looking good for the rest of the day and so it would have been had we not forgotten that we
traditionally do not step off until at least an hour after the start of the Parade - so we waited and watched many
other Paraders pass us by and had a truly enjoyable time doing so. Marlboro traditionally attracts many politicians
but whether it was the weather predictions or the fact that this is generally not an election year in Massachusetts,
few politicians were to be seen. What we did see and enjoyed was the maturing of some other Parading groups including
live statue replications by some that were very realistic. In particular the WWI soldier statue (that is in the middle
of MARLBORO)representation done by the LOYAL ORDER OF THE MOOSE was so perfect that many thought it to not be a live
statue representation. Additionally a music group billing themselves as the INCA SON (representing a part of Latin
American Culture and heritage) who had paraded for the past several years had improved so much in costume, float
decoration, and musical presentation that even we were compelled to give them a strong ovation for their exceptional
performance. As for us, as we waited to step off, occasional showers passed by and the skies darkened turning the
ominous predictions into reality. The beginning of parading continued with the showers being sporadic. We all were
in amazement that the horn section of the BAND was able to perform at all (our horns are reed instruments and once
those reeds get wet they become difficult to play) - but the weather did not deter us but,
about half way through the PARADE the skies opened up and the predicted torrential downpours happened and our
ability to perform
was somewhat impacted upon but fortunately it did not last too long and we chose to simply view it as an opportunity
to wash our uniforms while getting soaked. Most of us brought some rain gear to this Parade but even it was really
not enough to keep the driving rain away. Eventually the heavy rain stopped and during the rest of the Parade we
experienced
some intermittent showers which we did not mind by that time (once you are soaked, a little more rain doesn't make
any difference). Surprisingly the onlookers held firm throughout the
rains and it was a pleasure to see them hanging in there. They appreciated our performance and our
sticking it out
as well and, despite everything, the PARADE turned out quite well. We miraculously put on another good
performance
which was enjoyed by all and we even observed some new dancing talent (including a GREAT DANE dog who was observed
leaping and barking
in perfect time to the beat of one of our songs) in the crowd.
Marlboro traditionally has some
of the best dancers and this year was no exception. All-in-all the day proved to be a very good (but wet)
one and we
will be looking forward to returning next year.

On October 5, 2013, a modest turnout of Members participated in the EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS HOMECOMING PARADE.
Despite exceptional weather and ideal conditions for the day, for some reason the Parade simply was not well
executed and there really was no reason for that. We have no qualms with doing a parade slowly so that the audience
might better enjoy what is being presented but a parade that starts and stops incessantly is not all that enjoyable and
that is what was experienced this year at this Parade. Regardless, we put on a good performance for the audience and
we believe that they enjoyed our performance. EVERETT is not always this way, so we will be looking forward to returning
next year and hope that whatever plagued this year's efforts will be resolved by then.
On October 6, 2013, having been invited to do so, we participated in a Parade in ROSLINDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Original weather
forecasts for the day were for early morning rains with overcast projections for the rest of the day. Little could
have been less accurate but , before we discuss that, we must turn to the adventuresome trip to Roslindale. For some
reason there was a great deal of confusion as to how we were to get to the Parade. The plan was to take a van
available at Aleppo and to have it driven by a third party. Apparently other units were also invited to go to Roslindale
and yet others were invited to go to a different Parade. Some drivers were to go to one location and others were to go
to others. So we packed into a van and eventually a driver showed up who did not know where he was to go or how to get
there! Despite giving him instructions, he refused to move until his GPS system kicked in and told him
how to get there and that would have been fine if we had a street address for where we were headed - but we didn't.
Finally, the GPS came to life and we headed out, and a few miles down the road we realized that it was taking him
via a route that had been closed for the day for a Charitable Walk. Fortunately, one of our Members (Rick Lemerise, Jr.) works in Roslindale and
was able to guide the driver to where we were going - THEN panic struck when the driver realized he was supposed to
be at an alternative Parade and threatened to leave us behind. We weren't about to let that happen and wind up being
stranded in Roslindale so we eventually convinced him to stay. The early morning weather seemed to be holding
though the sky was heavily overcast. We had arrived early and had some time to check out other units and
personalities who were going to be participating in the Parade and enjoyed doing that. Of particular note was Boston's
Mayor (Roslindale being a part of Boston) Thomas Menino making his last appearance in this Parade before he bows out of
the Mayor's Office. It was a pleasure to see and have the opportunity to congratulate him on some 20 years of
exceptional service. Of particular additional note was the magnanimous gesture of Band Member, JON LAPOMARDO, who picked up
some food for the Band. All appreciated the gesture and thanked him for his kindness. WAY TO GO JON! So we ate, we waited,
we shmoozed and we prepared our float for the Parade and waited a little more. During that time, a young lady came
aboard the
float (with the permission of her mother) and tried every percussion instrument that we have. She had a good time and we
enjoyed amusing her. Finally, we stepped off to a bit of a drizzle which was not too bothersome originally, but it kept
coming and eventually became a steady (and sometimes hard and cold) rain. Unlike MARLBORO, the people in Roslindale did
not stick around for the Parade or so it seemed. The crowd was quite sparse and came in pockets which seemed to be more
interested in the Politicians who were present and were out in force campaigning for upcoming local elections. We did
our best to entertain and put on a good show (though our horns did not hold up as well in the rain as they had at
previous parades) and we believe that we succeeded in doing that. We believe that the weather was a big factor with this
Parade and we were a bit disappointed with that. At the end of the Parade, we climbed back into the van we used to come
to Roslindale in and had RICK assist the driver in getting us back to Wilmington. Without RICK we do not know where we would
have wound up - so we were all grateful for his assistance as well. Generally, we enjoy doing Parades such as this and
hope that, with better weather, this might be a more enjoyable Parade than what we experienced this year and hope to have the
opportunity to experience that in the future.
On October 14, 2013, a modest number of Band Members participated in the REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS Columbus Day Parade.
Weather
was great for the day and our turnout was affected mostly by the fact that several of our Members who would have
otherwise participated in the Parade had to work on the day. Our performance was undeterred by the smaller than
usual
turnout and the crowd clearly enjoyed our performance just as much as they enjoyed having the Parade return to
Revere after an absence of
several (5) years. We were also happy to return to Revere and enjoyed the Parade as much as the onlooking audience.
The Revere
Parade marks the conclusion of our public parading and performance schedule for the year. We hope that everyone
enjoyed our efforts throughout the year. We look forward to next year and additional opportunities to perform for
all. Our best wishes are
extended to all until them - see you next year! An independent YOUTUBE posting covering the portion of the Parade in which
we are shown performing may be

The Parading Shriners come into the picture at about the 0:58 mark and THE ORIENTAL BAND

We concluded our rehearsals for the year on November 14, 2013 and expect to restart them on January 9, 2014
in anticipation of preparing for the traditional Aleppo Installation Ceremonial to be held on January 25, 2014.
Before wrapping everything up for the year, however, we held our ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY during our year end
sabbatical on December 8, 2013. A strong turnout of members and spouses made for an enjoyable time
at Angelica’s Restaurant & Functions located in Middleton, MA. This was a new site for this event
and everyone enjoyed it immensely.
We Thank everyone who came out see us this past year - we look forward to seeing you again next year.
We would also like to extend our CONGRATULATIONS to Band Member, Dennis Reebel, on his performance as POTENTATE
for the year. Things rarely go as one plans despite the best efforts to do so. This year was no exception to that
rule but it is the way and manner that one deals with the challenges that makes all the difference and the way
and manner that Dennis dealt with the matters of the year was refreshing and admirable to see and witness and,
as a result,
we have experienced a very good year under his leadership. CONGRATULATIONS, again, Dennis - you did well and made
the Band even that much more proud to have you as a Member. We look forward to having you return to practice and
performing
with us in the future.
OUR FUTURE PARADE/PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE (SO FAR) LOOKS LIKE THIS:
ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS - PATRIOT'S DAY PARADE - TBD
SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS - MEMORIAL DAY PARADE - TBD
WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MEMORIAL DAY PARADE - TBD
MARLBORO, MASSACHUSETTS - LABOR DAY PARADE - TBD
OUR PUBLIC PARADE AND PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE FOR THE 2013 YEAR HAS BEEN COMPLETED - LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR!
COME OUT AND SEE US PERFORM - YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
There will undoubtedly be some additional Parades as our performance schedule continues to develop. Any changes will be posted.

everything about this visit.

All had a great time in Millbury which was reflected in our performance and the gratitude shown from the
audience. An independent YOUTUBE posting covering the portion of the Parade in which we are shown performing may be

many other artifacts of prior performances.

We congratulate RON on this achievement and wish
him the best during the term of his Office.

live statue replications by some that were very realistic.

The Parading Shriners come into the picture at about the 0:58 mark and THE ORIENTAL BAND
comes in at about the 1:01:30 mark.

Shortly after our arrival the rain abated
and things were looking good for the rest of the day and so it would have been had we not forgotten that we
traditionally do not step off until at least an hour after the start of the Parade - so we waited and watched many

which was enjoyed by all and we even observed some new dancing talent (including a GREAT DANE dog who was observed
leaping and barking
in perfect time to the beat of one of our songs) in the crowd.

The Parading Shriners come into the picture at about the 0:58 mark and THE ORIENTAL BAND
comes in at about the 1:01:30 mark.

PROUD GRANDFATHER - ERIC HOLT

On July 30, 2013, Band Member and Potentate, DENNIS REEBEL, invited the BAND to his BLUE LODGE for its ANNUAL STEAK DINNER - you can just imagine the difficulty we had with accepting this invitation! So a good turnout of Members went to MARLBORO, MASSACHUSETTS to perform for the LODGE. We were warmly received and appreciated everything about this visit. It was a true pleasure to perform for all who were there and we think that they appreciated it as well. It was also a delight to see DENNIS pitch in to grill the steaks to perfection and were disappointed that we could not tear him away from those duties and convince him to participate with us during the evening. It seems that (as he should) he is taking this POTENTATE stuff seriously. The food was exceptional and few were able to finish the enormous steaks brought before us. Despite a slight mishap, everything went reasonably well and we are hoping to be able to add this to our annual agenda (and will be starving ourselves over the next few months in anticipation of returning). A BIG THANK goes to DENNIS for arranging this outing and to all who participated in any fashion whatsoever.
After considerable discussion, it was determined that we will not be participating in the NORTHEAST SHRINE ORIENTAL BAND competition to be held in CORNWALL, ONTARIO. Our best wishes go to all who do compete there.
Though we will not be competing in CORNWALL, BAND MEMBER, RON HENDERSON, will be making the trip to CORNWALL to be installed as PRESIDENT of The Northeast Shrine Oriental Band. We congratulate RON on this achievement and wish him the best during the term of his Office.
